In the beginning of my research, I happened to read an article about Roger Ebert’s final days written by his wife. She explains in the article that Roger had cancer and he wasn’t sure he believed in God. She says this: “But the day before he passed away, he wrote me a note: This is all an elaborate hoax. I asked him, What's a hoax? And he was talking about this world, this place. He said it was all an illusion.” When I first read this quote by Roger, I was baffled. What did he mean, this world is an illusion. After researching more and continuing down my journey I started to understand.

I knew this was an important secret that Roger had shared and I wanted to solve the riddle. I understood after reading the book, Your Soul’s Plan by Robert Schwartz. In Schwartz’s book he explains through multiple case examples that before we incarnate on Earth, we create a pre-birth contract or a soul plan. This contract includes who will be our parents and siblings, the location and time period we are born in, challenges, potential spouses and children, and our exit points (points in time when our Soul can leave Earth and return home). Of course humans have free will but the high level blueprint of our lives is meticulously planned. The spirit side has some nice tools to review all the different paths and probabilities our life can take so nothing is by surprise. On top of that, every night when we sleep we leave our bodies to meet with our spirit guides to review our plan.

Schwartz’s book also clearly explains that the spirit realm is our true home. The human body is just a temporary vehicle for learning experiences on Earth. Essentially our human life is like a play and we are all the actors. As part of the pre-birth contract, our Soul is fully aware that we will have amnesia and we will not remember who we are as a Soul, past lives, and our true home. We could never accomplish all the learnings we planned if we remembered.

The purpose of reincarnation is to learn. When we incarnate there are very specific objectives. A physical body on Earth is considered precious by the spirit side, Souls line up for a chance to incarnate on Earth (shocking I know!). So the Soul is going to be very specific in the time period, the location, the type of body, and the family members chosen. Our family members are usually from our soul group, souls we've known for eons and usually have reincarnated with before.

Many near death experiencers say that they were shown past lives where they and their family members played many different roles. I'll share a quote from Ellyn Dye's near death experience, "Yet even more incredible, I also had vivid glimpses of each one of them and me in other lifetimes, in other time periods, in other locations, settings, and circumstances when and where we had known each other. I realized that these loved ones and I had been together in many different relationships and different roles, many, many times before. While I knew them in this life as mother, father, grandparent, uncle or aunt, in other lives they may have played the role of my sibling, lover, child, friend, or even an antagonist or adversary. We were like a large acting troupe moving from town to town (and from time to time), presenting different plays, and each playing different characters in relation to each other."

Souls will even set up certain situations and phrases to say to each other in their human life to trigger a remembrance of the soul plan. Are there people in your life you would say are "familiar" even though you didn't meet them before? Right before my cousin's wedding, my cousin told his best friend that he had a cousin he should meet. He said that we would be a good match. This friend and I met at the wedding and could not stop talking, it was like we had known each other in a prior life. We were married and pregnant about a year later. I remember telling my family, "it's like we are puzzle pieces that fit perfectly together." I now know that my husband and I have had many lives together including on other planets. Recently I met with an intuitive that could channel the higher self, I asked her to channel my higher self. I asked my higher self if my husband and I had a pre-birth contract. Here is an excerpt from the channeling: "With regards to this relationship it is blessed by sacred energy, it is imprinted by many lifetimes of experience, some shared, some individual and coming back together for the purpose of sharing."

This concept of a soul plan and soul group is articulated in Michael Newton’s books, Journey of Souls and Destiny of Souls. Dr. Michael Newton was a psychologist and Hypnotherapist who realized that when his clients were under hypnosis they would discuss the afterlife in minute detail. In all these books, the Soul is a highly intelligent being and knows what it’s doing. The Soul wants creative experiences and learnings. Many experiences that humans deem negative like abusive parents, disease, abortion, divorce, and all the different options of death are experiences that the Soul knows could be a probability when going into the life. It’s hard for a human to understand that we plan something like cancer but think of all the ways cancer can help a human learn compassion and the wonderful people a person is surrounded by when going through cancer. Even pregnancy complications and abortion are described as planned experiences, I've read that the baby is usually an advanced Soul that wanted to experience being in a mother’s womb but did not want to live a full human life.

Another experience deemed negative by humanity is the death of a child. I've read that the Souls of the parents and child planned this experience. Sometimes this lesson is for the parents to pursue spirituality and then help others. Also the death of a child creates a lot of awareness for change and brings communities together. I've read quite a few books and listened to podcasts by parents of children across the veil. The parents always say that the child communicates to them through a medium or channeler that it was their planned time to exit the life. See my blog post called Parents that Work with their Children Across the Veil for more on this.

As I started to understand this concept of a soul plan, I realized this means that no one is a victim because we plan our own experiences. I'm not saying that we shouldn't have compassion for each other because we all know this planet is tough. What I'm saying is, we may not be fully in control of what happens in this life but we are in control of how we perceive it and understand it. What if experiences were not happening to us but happening for us. For the learning. If everything is a learning experience, even the experiences we deem as negative or painful, then it changes things a bit.

It’s difficult to see that we plan such experiences for ourselves but the Soul does not suffer. A human life is like the blink of an eye when we exist for eternity. Older evolved souls have lived hundreds of lives on Earth. Until we get the fuller picture from the higher realms, we can try to figure out the purpose, roles, challenges, and what our Soul wants to learn in this play. In the book, Emmanuel’s Book III, there’s a quote that has stayed with me, “There is nothing that can happen to you which your soul has not already endorsed”.
