Meditation Overview
Before I started meditating, I was a very stressed, impatient and anxious person. I started meditating for only 3 minutes at a time. I used Suzanne Giesemann's free Sip of the Divine meditation on her gifts page. I enjoyed the little meditation which led me to exploring other meditations that I liked as well. Now I meditate for at least 30 minutes a day. On a weekend day, if I can get the time, I will meditate for 1-2 hours. I'm a much more patient, calm, balanced, and relaxed person after meditating for three years.
Below are the different brain wave states. When we meditate we are in alpha or theta states.
Beta is an awake, normal, alert state of consciousness.
Alpha is a relaxed meditative state which is called expanded awareness.
Theta is a very relaxed state which is the state we are in when we are in deep meditation and under hypnosis.
Delta is the state we are in when sleeping.
How Long to Meditate
According to HeartMath Institute, you can achieve a coherent state in as little as one minute so really any amount of time is beneficial. During one of my meetings with a channeler, I asked my spirit guide how long to meditate. This is what my spirit guide suggested: "Meditate for as long as what feels good and then just a couple moments longer, moments can be minutes or certainly can be segments of 5 minutes of time, you decide."
I heard Dr. Eben Alexander (neurosurgeon and near death experiencer) once say on a podcast that meditating past an hour is when the magic happens. I would agree with him that as I started meditating longer, it allowed for deeper meditations. It sometimes takes me 30-40 minutes for my brain to stop spinning and then I can enjoy the meditation.
Binaural Beats
Binaural beats are tones of slightly different frequencies played in separate ears simultaneously. The concept is that binaural beats trick the brain and allow us to meditate more effectively by reaching the alpha state quickly. The company Hemi-Sync was founded by Robert Monroe due to the research done at the Monroe Institute on states of consciousness. I personally use binaural beat meditations because I do believe binaural beats reduce my spinning thoughts and help me get into a deeper meditation. I shared the links at the bottom with the meditations I use. I really like the Expand App by the Monroe Institute. There are a lot of different meditations on that app, some guided and some not, so it allows someone to figure out what they like. Meditation is really a personal thing and everyone has different preferences on what they like in regards to the sounds, tones, guided vs not guided..etc. For example my kids do a meditation before bed...my youngest likes ocean sounds, my older son likes a guided meditation where you lay in a row boat and then write numbers on a beach, and my daughter likes me to do a guided meditation for her.
Meditation Reduces Fear of Death
I think that the books I read, in combination with meditation, absolved my fear of death. There are different articles on why meditation reduces fear of death but based on my experience, I believe this is because we are experiencing different states of consciousness. The different states of consciousness allow us to connect to an energetic component that is separate from the physical self. We realize through meditation that there is something more going on than just the physical. I don't think this is explained but experienced.
How to Meditate
I personally like to meditate lying down because if I meditate for longer than 15 minutes my head starts to bob. I know there are some hard core meditators out there and hundreds of different books on how to meditate but people should just do what feels good. It's really about relaxing the left brain in order to gain awareness about ourselves and our purpose.
Yoga, qigong, and walking can be considered forms of meditation so if you are someone that struggles to stay still these are options as well. It seems like qigong has been picking up in popularity. I like Lee Holden's qigong YouTube channel. He has a lot of free quick qigong videos that helped me with exhaustion when my kids were waking me up at night, and I needed an energy boost during the day: https://www.youtube.com/@HoldenQiGong
