In blog posts, Details of the Afterlife Part 1 and Details of the Afterlife Part 2, I provide information and quotes from the book, Exploring the Eternal Soul by Andy Tomlinson. In those blog posts I walk through the process of death, the welcome party and entering the spirit realm, the life review, healing process, returning to the soul group, meeting with the Council of Elders, and planning a new incarnation.

In part two of Tomlinson's book, he provides information on higher level questions he asked clients while under hypnosis. The questions were actually asked by the person that was under hypnosis to the Council of Elders. There were a couple questions and answers that I thought people would find really interesting and all the answers were consistent with my understanding as well. Tomlinson's questions/comments are in italic and the client's answers are in quotes. See below:

Purpose of reincarnation:

What is the purpose of reincarnating on the physical plane?

"To experience as many emotions and realities as possible… To experience all that is and can be. Different experiences help to make the soul feel whole again before it returns to the Source.

Your soul is made up of all the experiences, all the challenges, all the strengths you’ve gained in overcoming things. Although it feels interminable actually doing it, from the spirit world view, being full of those learning and experiences has created who you are. You become more sure of your place in the scheme of things.

Because all souls are part of the universal Source, rather than any rules or laws, there is a ‘way of being’ that is followed… There is an inbuilt honor and respect that governs all actions, because all are working towards the plan… Free will is supreme on the physical plane, but all choices eventually lead towards the highest good."

Can someone choose not to reincarnate?

"It’s a choice whether to incarnate and to experience all the emotions. Some choose not to… They choose other planes of existence, in other realities, other realms, which are not necessarily physical. Reincarnation on earth is just one of many experiments, but it involves a range of emotions that is just not possible to experience on the spirit plane. So it’s a brave experience. You don’t have to reincarnate on earth if you don’t want to, although somehow you feel compelled to. But there comes a point where a soul may feel that they have learnt all they need to on earth, and can move on to other planes, to learn new things… There are many things souls can do on the spiritual plane to learn too… It depends on what you want to learn. If you’re perhaps working on emotional or physical lessons, then the earth plane is the easiest and quickest way because matter is so heavy. If you’re working on things of a higher nature, like lessons of pure connection, of creation, of manifestation on an energetic rather than on a physical level, then this is easier on the spiritual plane."

Life on other planet:

Can souls from earth gain experience on other planets?

"Source energy is present in all things in the universe so it should be no surprise that souls may incarnate into other planets and life forms, both physical as well as energetic form."

What is the nature of life on other planets? Are any of them comparable to the earth experience?

"There are other planets where everything is more in energy form, where consciousness is able to present itself in different forms. It may not be incarnating into a form as such, but a part of the consciousness travels... It may not be a life as you know it. They can visit for a very short time to experience the space and the different energies. Some planetary systems are more akin to the spiritual realm, they are only one step removed from being here. Others are more mental."

Do these non-physical environments provide an easier learning experience for newer souls?

"You are not in a physical body, you are more of a spiritual being. Perhaps if you imagine yourself in a dream, you are not in a physical body but you are aware of your existence. So in these dimensions you know the Source is there, and therefore there is less fear. There is considerable scope for growth for junior souls in these levels, because they have an understanding that they are separate from but still close to the Source… There’s a lot of teaching about understanding different conscious and emotional levels, and the importance of, for example, love. There’s also play, and just an understanding of beauty."

Most sources maintain that earth provides a unique reincarnation experience:

"At the current time earth is unique because of the range of experiences and emotions... There is also little memory of being part of the One. There are other physical realities with different vibrations and energy levels that provide an environment where souls can incarnate to experience a different reality and emotions, but earth is unique because of the veil of amnesia that causes the emotions to be so intense, and this is highly valued at a soul level. It’s a difficult ground for people to learn on because it can be harsh, and it’s difficult for souls to deal with the mental and the physical and the lack of spirituality that you have on earth, but it is also a very rewarding planet with lots of opportunities for real, faster growth."

When I asked if there are any planets that are home to more advanced life forms than humans, the sources say there are many and remind us what advanced means:

"Yes. They might look like humans, but they are more spiritually advanced. Humans measure advancement in terms of technology, but that is not advanced to us."

Human vs Animal Souls

Are there differences between human and animal souls?

"Animals and humans are all part of the same soul energy (all come from Source). Souls choose to incarnate and choose the form. There is in animal form a shared energy, a link. They do not need to speak, or organize. They share the knowledge, they share the knowing of when it’s time to migrate, of when it’s time to run. Animal soul energy chooses to work with instinct and innocence as the driving force. The human choice is more complicated and difficult because of a higher level of consciousness and free will. The creative energy source takes on the chosen differences."

Creation of New Souls

How are new souls created?

"You have specialist teams who cleave off part of the Source energy to create a new fledgling soul… They carve off what is required, that is their specialist decision… It depends on the path of the soul and its purpose. Each soul would already have a purpose… Each soul will be created for a function, with a specialist purpose that is part of the bigger whole… The Source knows about this, and the soul itself will learn what its purpose is over time. It will find it has core skills and traits and naturally go in that direction."

More detailed description of the birthing of a new soul:

"The new soul emerges out of a white light, a little bit like an egg being released from the ovary. It comes out empty and yet full of potential. And there are specialist souls who help it, because it is like a newborn baby."

Can you talk a little bit about the role of these specialist souls, and how they work?

"They are like midwives, who nurture all the new souls in a special environment because their energy is so raw, so open and pure – but only because it has not been formed, or gained any of the experiences that will give it its identity and individuality. And they have to reach a certain point before they can take their first step into the physical plane."

Evolution of the soul after first leaving the Source:

Do they receive any teachings or anything like that in the spirit realms?

"Yes. They have to be prepared for their first lifetime. They’re not thrown in at the deep end and given a really hard lifetime."

What sort of very first life would they have?

"They might choose a quite privileged lifetime where they don’t have to work too hard, just to have the experience of being in a physical body, because it’s hard enough just to understand and learn and come to terms with having a body. It’s such a vastly different experience to anything they’ve had on the spiritual levels that it has to be very gentle. Or some might choose just to be a baby for a little while, spending a couple of years and then leaving. It takes time to get used to having a body. It takes a lot of lifetimes to learn about the interplay between a soul and a body. And they have to be taught all the way along, so they’re very closely guided."

Above are just a few of the high level questions and answers provided in part two of Tomlinson's book. All the answers provided above are consistent with what I have found in my overall research into near death experiences, mediumship, and other books about in between life hypnosis. To summarize, I reviewed below concepts from Tomlinson's book in blog posts, Details of the Afterlife Part 1,2, and 3. Hopefully this provides an overview of the journey of the soul and the soul's perspective.
